Announcement

The China-U.S. Forum on the Research and Teaching of Chinese Language and Culture at the College Level (The 2nd Xiamen University-Purdue University International Forum on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language), hosted by Xiamen University, will be held on December 10th-11th, 2022 at Xiamen University. The Forum aims to promote research on the theory and share best practices of teaching Chinese language and culture among the U.S. and Chinese faculty teaching at the college level, facilitate disciplinary development and skills training for international Chinese education, and strengthen academic exchanges and cooperation among the U.S. and Chinese university teachers, scholars, and experts. The Forum is jointly organized by the Chinese International Education College (Overseas Education College) at Xiamen University and the School of Languages and Cultures at Purdue University, and co-organized by Chinese Testing International Co., Ltd., and Chinese Plus with a combination of both online and offline platforms. We are now calling for abstracts of papers and looking forward to contributions from scholars as well as teaching professionals as we explore opportunities, challenges, and trends of Chinese language teaching in China and the U.S., thereby advancing our profession.

I. Date and Venue

(I) Date

The Forum will be held on December 10th-11th, 2022 with registration on December 9th, 2022.

(II) Venue

In-person Venue: Sciences and Arts Center of Xiamen University; Virtual Venue: Zoom

II. Topics

The main topics of the Forum include but are not limited to the following:

(I) Development and research of distance or hybrid courses and flipped classroom

(II) Design and research of Chinese language/culture study abroad programs

(III) Pragmatics in teaching Chinese as a Second Language (CSL)

(IV) Chinese Proficiency Assessment Standards for International Chinese Language Education and HSK Test

(V) Computer-assisted/distance Chinese language/culture teaching and learning

(VI)Teacher training and professional development for MA students concentrating on teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages

(VII) Chinese philology and CSL

(VIII) Cultural and cross-cultural communication in CSL

III. Highlight of the Forum

The Forum consists of 6 keynote speeches, 12 invited talks, 5 workshops, and 1 round table discussion. To date, more than 150 abstracts has been received from China and U.S., as well as other countries such as U.K., Australia, Singapore, Thailand, etc.
